Massage Therapies - Massage can be defined as the systematic and manual manipulation of the body’s soft tissue for therapeutic purposes promoting health and well-being, this manual manipulation has been developed to involve a serious of recognised movements. Massage is a skill all on its own and the masseuse must study the skeleton and every muscle in the body prior to learning these moves.

The understanding is that the word massage is derived from the Arabic word ‘mass’ or ‘Mas’h’ meaning to press gently. Massage is an art form and as an art it is as old as man himself, a good ex ample of this that when you have an injury or knock the immediate instinct is to rub the area injured to ease pain or discomfort.

Massage has developed since early forms and evolved from a both Eastern and Western traditions. The greatest progress of therapeutic massage recorded to date has been made by Swedish physiologist Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839); he created a scientific system of massage movements and techniques more commonly known today as Swedish massage. These moves or system comprises five basic strokes: effleurage (stroking), petrissage (kneading), friction, tapotement (percussion), and vibration, the key to learning massage is to establish the problems of your client which of these strokes should be used on the different parts of the body.

Modern massage is a multidimensional skill which encompasses a wide variety of techniques and styles, many of which have their roots in the Swedish system. People are very aware of the use of massage in combating the stresses and tensions of modern living. This fantastic tool is also sued very commonly by professionals ranging from athletes, sports people and dancers. In fact most of these professions consider massage to be a must and integral part of their training schedules to prevent injury, improve suppleness, aid quicker recovery and to prevent or treat soft tissue injuries.

Some the techniques employed by Inside&Out are the same as mentioned above and used to good effect in helping our clients to deal with stress and promote relaxation.
