Nails are categorised as healthy when pinkish in colour hard to and smooth touch without being too brittle. Nails serve to protect the finger endings and all the nerve endings, these are some of the most sensitive in the human body.

Nails are made up of three key parts-

• Hard Nail itself
• Lunula
• Cuticle and nail bed

Our nails not just one thing but compiled of a number of different component parts, some of these different parts are plainly visible and some are of these nail components are not so visible. The part that is clear to see and everyone refers to as the nail is called the nail plate, the nail plate is a hard and smooth surface usually uniformed in shape and rectangular, although uniformed nails differ from person to person.

The colour of most and nails are translucent with a pink like background colour which is usually down to the blood vessels located underneath. Again the exact colour of the nail varies from person to person. Another factor in the colour of the nail at any given time is the environment as thee blood vessels beneath the nail are susceptible to cold and heat, damage and pressure the nail can become paler when subjected to colder environments, this applies to the nail of both the hands and the feet.

Half moons

These areas of the nail are white in colour, and are represented by the half-moon like shape at the base of the nail called the Lunula. The shape of this Lunula is obtained form the nail cells which are not yet fully matured, when they finally mature they will turn a pale noting that these cells have matured and the then turn translucent and grow toward the nails' tips. As discussed the exact size, shape, brightness and colour of the lunula varies from person to person and even from hand to hand and finger to finger. The lunula is more pronounced is the thumb for unknown reasons. This part of the nail generally start to fade with age.

Cuticles and nail beds

What cuticle part of the nail is a thin tissue from the finger to overlap the nail plate, which forms a rim around the bottom of the nail. It acts as protective layer to ensure foreign bodies and debris, bacteria etc cannot get in and cause harm infection in or under the nail bed itself.

The nail bed is the tissue which sits directly underneath the nail and nail plate; it provides nutrition to the nail areas via a network of blood vessels which support growth and vitality in the nail itself. It is attached to the nail bed by way of vertical ridges and depressions on the underside that fit together like jigsaw pieces, effectively locking and binding the bed and plate together.

The final part of the nail and nail bed is the . the matrix this part of nail is the area hidden underneath the cuticle and is more commonly known as the root. This is where the nail produces keratin.

Cells in the nail divide in the matrix, this provides the additional cells during the lengthening process for the nail plate which in turn pushes it over the nail bed area. There are skin area that act as folds on and around the nail base which locate and hold the nails in place.

How should I look after my nails?

Nail biting is extremely bad for you nails as the nail is torn which damages the fibres of the nail and stresses the nail bed and cuticle areas, quite often the nail biting becomes habit forming usually during stressful events when the biting can be too near the root.
