Airbrushes are used to apply special tanning solutions as a form of sunless tanning that simulates the appearance of a natural sun tan. It is promoted as a safer and healthier alternative to the damaging effects of long term exposure to the sun.
On the other hand, using sun beds as a way to tan is extremely bad for you and can result in skin cancer. Sunless tanning arose in response to links between sun exposure and skin cancer discovered in the 1960s, along with other alternatives to natural sun tanning such as the use of a sun bed or tanning bed. The reason for this are; tanning is a natural process, whereby the skin creates the brown-coloured pigment called melanin, to protect it against the harmful UV rays in sunlight, but operates equally with artificial UV radiation. There are two different mechanisms involved. Firstly, the UVA-radiation generates oxidative stress, which in turn oxidises pre-existing melanin. This leads to rapid darkening of already existing melanin. Secondly, there is an increased production of melanin. Darkening of the skin is caused by an increased release of the pigment melanin into the skin's cells after exposure to ultraviolet radiation. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes and protects the body from direct and indirect DNA damage absorbing an excess of solar radiation.
Spray tanning caters to many different groups, including people who are competitive dancers, pageant contestants and performers. In addition, it is used by people who spray tan for medical reasons such as having had skin cancer or problems with their skin. Spray tanning is not 'painting' your skin, it is a reaction that the DHA and the upper layer of your skin have with one another. DHA is also known as; dihydroxyacetone. It is a colour reaction, rather than a dye, and it is completely safe, unlike a traditional sun tan or tanning in a tanning bed.
